Released in October of 1997, Gattaca was a sign of the times. The late nineties were an unusual era for western society.  9/11 was yet to happen, the millenium bug was yet to scare people for no reason, and technology seemed to be moving in leaps and bounds. Also public awareness was increasing into the field of genetics.
