Released in 1980, Directed by Ken Russell and adapted for film from the novel by Paddy Chayefski, Altered States features a young William Hurt in his first major motion picture. William Hurt stars as Dr Eddie Jessup, a scientist using sensory deprivation to discover the mysteries of schizophrenia. However, after some very dangerous experiments involving untested hallucinatory drugs, it becomes apparent that he is really searching for way to reach a deeper state of consciousness within himself.
